The Rajya Sabha has cleared the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, which tightens existing norms by requiring an order from a judicial magistrate (first class) for birth and death registrations made more than two years after the event. The bill, already passed by the Lok Sabha, was approved without any discussion as opposition protests continued to disrupt the house.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha passed the Appropriation Bill and then adjourned for the day. Before that, Congress MP Manish Tewari sought the suspension of Question Hour, Zero Hour, and all other listed business to discuss the need for a new anti-defection law, describing mass political defections as driven by opportunism.
