Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday overturned a lower court's acquittal and convicted Tarun Tejpal, the 63-year-old founding editor of the now-defunct investigative magazine Tehelka, of rape, sentencing him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. The conviction reverses a Goa sessions court ruling that had cleared Tejpal of charges stemming from an alleged assault on a female colleague in 2013. Tejpal, who has maintained his innocence, said he will appeal the verdict at the Supreme Court. In a separate development, Indian filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj confirmed to Variety that he is developing a Rashomon-style film based on the case, hours after the conviction. Bhardwaj, known for his Shakespearean adaptations such as Maqbool and Omkara, has not yet revealed casting or production details. The ruling marks a significant turn in a case that has long divided India's media and legal circles.
