Suspected Iran-linked hackers shut down a Minnesota town's water treatment plant this week, one of more than 30 water systems in the state hit in a wave of intrusions, investigators said.
The attack knocked the plant's controls offline, but the town's water tower maintained pressure and prevented a service outage. Investigators have not publicly identified the affected town or the other targeted systems.
The hacking pattern closely resembles previous attacks linked to Iran, investigators said, though no formal attribution has been made.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of U.S. water infrastructure. Federal data shows there are 152,000 public drinking water systems and more than 16,000 wastewater treatment facilities across the country.
