Ben Jones, the actor best known for playing mechanic Cooter Davenport on "The Dukes of Hazzard" and who later served in Congress, has died. He was 84.
Jones died on Sunday from a heart attack, according to his wife, Alma Viator. She announced his death in a Facebook post that afternoon.
Beyond his acting career, Jones served as a Democratic congressman from Georgia in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was also known for his advocacy on behalf of rural communities and for preserving the legacy of the television show that made him famous.
Jones's portrayal of Cooter, the good-natured mechanic who helped the Duke cousins, made him a beloved figure to fans of the action-comedy series, which aired from 1979 to 1985.
