Palestinians launch social media campaign to challenge Gaza ceasefire narrative

Palestinian activists have started a social media campaign under the hashtag #TheyLiedtoYou to push back against the idea that a ceasefire in Gaza is holding. The campaign, which also uses the Arabic hashtag #كذبوا_عليكم, went viral on platforms like X and Instagram in mid-July. Participants, including journalists and ordinary residents, are sharing videos and posts showing what they say are continued Israeli airstrikes, destruction, and a humanitarian crisis. They argue that while the world may believe a ceasefire from October 2025 is in place, attacks on Gaza have not stopped. “They tricked you that the war is over... war didn’t end, it only ended on your screens,” said Gaza journalist Hani Aburezeq in a video. Other users accuse international media of ignoring the ongoing violence. According to Gaza's government media office, Israel has violated the ceasefire agreement nearly 3,800 times since October. At least 1,168 Palestinians have been killed in that period, officials say. The overall death toll since the conflict began in October 2023 has reached over 73,000, with thousands more missing. The campaign comes amid global events like the FIFA World Cup, which some say have distracted attention from Gaza. Israeli strikes continue to hit hospitals and residential areas, according to local reports. The situation remains dire, with widespread displacement and disease.
