The deadly Eaton Fire that devastated Altadena, north of Los Angeles, was caused by electrical arcing on an out-of-service Southern California Edison transmission tower, according to a final report released Tuesday. The conclusion came after an 18-month investigation by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Edison's power lines had long been suspected as the fire's origin. The fire broke out in January 2025 and destroyed large parts of the community, with fatalities reported. The report confirms that the tower, despite being out of service, was the source of the spark that ignited the blaze.
