Matthew McConaughey picked up a mandolin and joined the group the Last Bison for a bluegrass version of Ella Langley's hit song "Choosin' Texas" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The performance drew a visible reaction from Langley, who was reportedly delighted by the Oscar winner's take on her track.
McConaughey, who stars in the forthcoming film The Rivals of Amziah King, traded his usual acting roles for a musical turn on the late-night program. The rendition was described as rambling and loose, fitting the song's Texas roots.
The cover comes as Langley's music continues to gain traction. JoyBeth Taylor, who co-wrote "Choosin' Texas" as well as Langley's "I Can't Love You Anymore," currently sits at No. 6 on the all-genre Hot 100 Songwriters chart. The 28-year-old songwriter's success with the songs has been credited to her close creative team.
McConaughey's appearance on Fallon highlighted the crossover appeal of the country hit, which has resonated well beyond its original audience.
