Most Americans believe the United States has not achieved its goals in the war with Iran, a new poll has found. The Marquette Law School survey released Wednesday showed 88 percent of respondents said the U.S. had not met its objectives, up seven percentage points from April, while only 12 percent believed it had, down from 21 percent.
The poll comes as negotiations continue to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end more than five months of hostilities. Iran has said it will not reopen the strait unless the U.S. meets its demands, including compensation for damage done during the war. The U.S., for its part, says its top priority is ensuring Iran never gains nuclear capabilities, with keeping the strait fully open to traffic also a key goal.
The war has meanwhile intensified Iran's economic crisis, squeezing household budgets and hurting businesses. There are fears that millions of middle-income families are slipping closer to poverty.
