A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, killing at least 111 people and causing widespread destruction in Cali, the country's third-largest city.
Search teams and civilians in Cali picked through the remains of destroyed buildings, passing large pieces of concrete and rubble down a long line of volunteers. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed.
The tragedy dimmed what was meant to be a joyful moment on television. Telemundo's Operación Triunfo Season 1 finale went ahead with its final live show, where one singer was crowned the winner after weeks of competition. The U.S.-produced singing competition's finale was overshadowed by sadness because of the earthquake, though it was not reported whether anyone connected to the show was harmed.
The earthquake struck with no immediate reports of its epicenter, and authorities have not yet said how many people remain missing or injured.
