A small tourist plane crashed in southern Peru, killing at least 13 people, local authorities said Saturday. The aircraft was on a sightseeing flight over the Nazca Lines, ancient geoglyphs etched into the desert.
The plane went down in a field, according to Nazca's municipal government. Police Major Jorge Andrade said 11 passengers and two crew members died. The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. local time.
Reports differed on where the flight began. Police said the plane took off from the airport in Pisco, about 240 kilometers south of Lima, while the Guardian reported it departed from the nearby city of Ica.
The Nazca Lines, created by Indigenous inhabitants hundreds of years ago, form images of animals that can only be fully appreciated from the air.
