Six Summer Meteor Showers Beyond the Perseids

By TrendingWire Newsroom

The Perseid meteor shower is famous for its bright streaks across August skies, but summer actually hosts several other celestial displays worth watching. While the Perseids peak around mid-August, six lesser-known meteor showers also light up the night from June through August. These showers may produce fewer meteors per hour, but they can still offer impressive views, especially under dark skies away from city lights. Observers should look for them on clear nights when the moon is not too bright. The best viewing time is usually after midnight, when the Earth faces the direction of incoming debris. Even without special equipment, patience and a comfortable chair can reward skywatchers with shooting stars. Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris left by comets or asteroids. Each shower is named after the constellation from which it appears to radiate. For example, the Delta Aquariids in late July and the Alpha Capricornids around the same time are two of the six. Others include the Piscis Austrinids, the Southern Delta Aquariids, and the Kappa Cygnids. To see them, find a dark location, lie back, and let your eyes adjust. Avoid looking at your phone, as the light ruins night vision. While the Perseids remain the summer highlight, these additional showers give stargazers more chances to enjoy nature's fireworks. So check a meteor calendar and plan a night under the stars.
