Spain announced Friday it will introduce temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, responding to similar measures imposed by Rome after a mass migration rush into the Spanish North African territory of Ceuta.
The checks will begin at midnight on Saturday and remain in place until 7 September, Spain's interior ministry said, citing persistent irregular migration pressure on Italy.
The move marks a rare dispute between the two European Union member states. It follows tens of thousands of people crossing from Morocco into Ceuta in an unprecedented and deadly rush, which prompted Italy to impose its own border controls.
