James Webb Telescope Reveals How Early Galaxies Created Stardust

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has helped astronomers understand how the first galaxies produced vast amounts of dust that spread across the early universe. By studying a nearby, modern galaxy, scientists were able to peer into the processes that once filled the cosmos with stardust. Dust is a crucial ingredient for forming stars and planets, but its origins have been unclear. The new research shows that certain types of stars, known as Wolf-Rayet stars, are effective at creating and releasing dust into space. These stars are massive and short-lived, and they throw off material that later cools and becomes dust. The JWST’s powerful infrared instruments allowed the team to observe the dust-making process in detail within a galaxy located about 30 million light-years away. This galaxy, though young, resembles the conditions of the early universe. The observations revealed that the dust forms in clouds around Wolf-Rayet stars, then spreads into the wider galaxy. Previously, telescopes could not see these details because dust blocks visible light. JWST’s infrared view cuts through the dust, offering a clearer picture. The findings suggest that similar processes were at work in the early universe, explaining how the first galaxies became “dust factories.” This discovery helps fill a gap in our understanding of cosmic evolution. Dust is essential for cooling gas to form stars and for building planets. Knowing how it was produced in the early universe is a major step in learning how galaxies and planetary systems came to be. The research was published in a scientific journal and marks another success for the JWST.
