A new study reveals that universal mathematical laws govern the decline in fertility as societies develop. Kenji Itao, a researcher at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan, analyzed 200 years of demographic data from 237 countries and territories. His findings provide a framework for understanding the demographic transition—the shift from high birth and death rates to longer lifespans and lower fertility that has transformed human history.
The study shows that despite differences in culture, economy, and geography, countries follow similar patterns when it comes to falling fertility rates.
