Truffles Help Bring Threatened Marsupials Back to Australian World Heritage Site

A new study has found that truffles and other underground fungi are crucial for the successful reintroduction of two threatened marsupial species. The research, conducted by Edith Cowan University (ECU), shows that these fungal food resources support the animals' survival in the Shark Bay World Heritage area in Western Australia. Ph.D. candidate Rebecca Quah led the study, which examined six sites across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including Dirk Hartog Island in Shark Bay. The team focused on two marsupials: the greater stick-nest rat and the Shark Bay bandicoot. Both species have been reintroduced to parts of their former range after declines due to introduced predators and habitat loss. The study confirmed that areas with abundant truffles and other fungi provided better conditions for the animals. These fungi are a key part of the marsupials' diet and help maintain the ecosystem by spreading spores. Conservation efforts often focus on removing threats like feral cats and foxes, but this research highlights the importance of ensuring enough food resources are available. The findings could improve future reintroduction programs for other species. The researchers say that restoring fungal communities is a simple but effective way to support both the animals and the environment.
