The Venice and San Sebastián film festivals will honor two leading directors this year. Luca Guadagnino, known for Call Me By Your Name and Challengers, will receive the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, running September 2-12, 2026. The award recognizes a filmmaker who has made a particularly original contribution to contemporary cinema. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 8, in the Sala Casinò. His new documentary, Joie de vivre, about legendary Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, will premiere at Venice. His film Artificial will not screen at the festival. Meanwhile, German director Werner Herzog will receive the Donostia Award at the San Sebastián Festival, held September 18-26. This is the festival's highest honor for career achievement. Herzog will be celebrated during the opening gala, followed by a screening of his new feature, Bucking Fastard, which will launch at the festival. Past Donostia recipients include Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Pedro Almodóvar, David Cronenberg, Juliette Binoche and Javier Bardem.
