Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has asked the state governor to grant 10-day parole to Balwant Singh Hawara, who was convicted in the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh. Mann cited humanitarian grounds, saying that after 31 years, Hawara's ailing mother now has renewed hope of meeting her son.
In a separate development, Ravneet Singh Bittu, the grandson of Beant Singh and a BJP leader, also supported the parole plea. Bittu drew a distinction between seeking justice for his grandfather's killing and showing compassion for the convict's elderly mother.
Hawara was convicted in the 1995 assassination of Beant Singh. The parole request is now with the Punjab Governor for consideration.
