Europe urged to learn from African heat coping strategies
By TrendingWire Newsroom
As European countries grapple with increasingly intense heatwaves, experts suggest looking to Africa for proven solutions. Communities across the continent have lived with extreme heat for generations, developing practical and low-cost methods to stay cool and safe.
In many African regions, traditional building designs use thick walls, small windows, and shading to keep interiors cool without air conditioning. Planting trees and using reflective materials on roofs are common practices. Urban planning often includes communal shaded areas and water features. These techniques require minimal energy and can be adapted for European cities.
Africa's experience also emphasizes behavior changes, such as adjusting work hours to avoid the hottest part of the day and wearing loose, light clothing. Countries like Niger and Burkina Faso have implemented early warning systems for heatwaves, helping communities prepare.
Climate scientists warn that Europe must act fast as rising temperatures pose health risks, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. Instead of relying solely on energy-intensive cooling, European planners could adopt lessons from Africa's time-tested approaches.
While Europe has modern technology, African communities offer simple, effective strategies that reduce heat impact. Cross-continental knowledge sharing could help both regions adapt to a warming world.
This perspective encourages a shift from viewing Africa only as a victim of climate change to a source of valuable solutions.
