Saudi authorities arrested more than 15,800 people in a week-long crackdown on residency, labor, and border security violations, the Ministry of Interior announced. The joint operations, conducted from August 24 to September 1, 2024, netted 7,892 for residency violations, 4,617 for border security breaches, and 3,327 for labor law offenses. Among those detained, 1,631 were caught trying to enter the country illegally—65% Ethiopian, 33% Yemeni, and 2% from other nationalities. Another 42 were arrested for attempting to leave illegally. Additionally, 21 people were held for helping violators by transporting, sheltering, or employing them. Officials said 30,139 violators are currently undergoing legal proceedings, including 28,087 men and 2,052 women. So far, 17,273 have been issued travel documents, 6,160 have completed travel bookings, and 12,211 have been deported. The ministry warned that anyone facilitating illegal entry or stay faces up to 15 years in prison, fines up to 1 million Saudi riyals (about $267,000), and confiscation of vehicles or property used in the crime. Citizens are urged to report violations via 911 in Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, or 999/996 elsewhere, with full confidentiality and no legal risk to informants.
