A New York City judge has ordered the administration of Zohran Mamdani to take down a list exposing the names and addresses of more than 900,000 homeowners, temporarily halting the rollout of a proposed luxury-home tax.
The list was intended to identify homeowners who might be subject to the new tax. The judge's order comes as a win for homeowners who objected to the public disclosure.
The tax plan has also highlighted a problem with vehicle registration fraud. Under the proposal, homeowners would have to prove their primary residency in the city. That could expose people who keep their cars registered out of state, a practice known as "garage fraud," used to avoid insurance and taxes.
Investigators say many out-of-state vehicles owe significant unpaid fines. Similar registration schemes have also been found in Italy and France.
