Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed Revolutionary Guard General Ali Abdollahi as chief of staff of the armed forces and named a new commander for the Guard, in his first senior military appointments since taking office, state media announced Monday.
Abdollahi, who previously led the Khatam al-Anbiya central command that coordinates operations across Iran's armed forces, was named chief of staff, while Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi was appointed commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with the rank of major general, according to a statement on Khamenei's website.
The appointments come early in the Middle East war after the death of Khamenei's father in US-Israeli strikes. The Times of India reported the reshuffle involved six senior commanders.
