Police in Jharkhand state used tear gas and a mild lathi-charge to stop a protest march to the state assembly on Monday over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. At least one activist, Devendra Nath Mahto, the leader of the Jharkhand Lok Jan Morcha (JLKM), was admitted to hospital after joining the march, as his health condition deteriorated. He had been on a hunger strike for nine days over the same issue.
Police said 14 officers were injured in the incident, while the superintendent of police said 3-4 cops were hurt in stone pelting by protesters. The authorities said the protests had been peaceful and that they will analyse CCTV footage to identify miscreants who disrupted the demonstration.
The protest was against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations in the state.
