European football's governing body has threatened a boycott of World Cups if Fifa president Gianni Infantino proceeds with plans to sell stakes in the tournament to private investors.
Uefa's 55 member associations voted unanimously to boycott Fifa tournaments, including World Cups, should Infantino press ahead. This would mean Spain and Portugal boycotting their own men's World Cup next time around, as the two countries are set to host.
Infantino's plan involves selling off stakes in the World Cup to a fund led by Donald Trump's son-in-law's brother. It has also drawn criticism from the North American confederation, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation.
In a separate development, Fifa's chief operating officer has strongly criticised the proposal, saying they would be willing to lose their job if it meant stopping it. The COO's remarks add to the growing opposition within football's governing structures.
