Residents propose merging housing unit with Buildings Department after deadly Hong Kong fire

By TrendingWire Newsroom

After Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades, some residents are calling for government changes. The fire occurred at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, killing several people and displacing many others. A public inquiry found that communication problems between two government bodies contributed to regulatory failures. The groups are the Housing Bureau's Independent Checking Unit (ICU) and the Buildings Department. According to recommendations released on Saturday from legal representatives of nine residents, merging the ICU with the Buildings Department could prevent future tragedies. The residents argue that the two arms have similar functions, and better coordination is needed. The fire, which happened in April, prompted a thorough investigation. The independent committee is still probing the incident. The proposal is one of several suggestions submitted by affected residents seeking accountability and improved safety measures. The government has yet to respond to the call for merger. The ICU was set up to check housing quality, while the Buildings Department oversees building safety. Critics say the split led to oversight gaps. The residents hope that merging the units will streamline inspection processes and enhance fire safety standards across public housing estates.
