At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Russian missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Serbia, a country traditionally friendly with Moscow. The attack exploited Ukraine's shortage of air defence systems, a problem Ukrainian officials have warned about for months. Zelenskyy pleaded for more air defence weapons, saying ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed. The shortage stems partly from a reversal by former US President Donald Trump, who backed away from a promise to allow Ukraine to manufacture missiles locally. In response to the strike, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia must pay for its actions.
