Sukhbir Singh Badal, chief of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former deputy chief minister of Punjab, was injured in an attack at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday. He was taken to a private hospital in Nanded.
Badal was walking towards the langar hall after paying obeisance at the Nanded Sahib gurdwara when a man attacked him with a kirpan, a traditional Sikh dagger, injuring his hand. Police have arrested one person.
The attacker is described as a Nihang, a member of a Sikh order, in his 60s, who worked as a sewadar, or volunteer, at the gurdwara. His identity has not been released.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry into the attack. The motive is not yet known.
