Pune Police have registered a case against a UK-based OCI cardholder for alleged religious conversion attempts under Maharashtra's new anti-conversion law. The man, a British national on a tourist visa, was accused by Hindutva organisations of delivering sermons at a church in Guruwar Peth and using them as a pretext to convert people, according to police.
He is also alleged to have spoken about Jesus and made statements about Hindu deities. In a separate case, a 21-year-old man was arrested under the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act.
The developments follow a wider debate over religious conversion and foreign funding. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said transparent organizations have nothing to fear.
