Joint US-Saudi airstrikes on Wednesday killed at least 20 members of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in Iraq, the state-sanctioned umbrella group said, as Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaydi called for an urgent security meeting. The US Central Command said it conducted “precision strikes” alongside Saudi Arabian Armed Forces targeting Iran-aligned groups. The PMF, which largely comprises Shia armed groups, reported that 32 fighters were wounded and that the death toll could rise as teams assess the affected sites. The strikes hit PMF positions across seven Iraqi provinces: Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala and Diyala, damaging buildings, vehicles and military equipment. The US and Saudi Arabia said the operation was in response to attacks on US forces and Saudi oil facilities. Prime Minister al-Zaydi’s office announced the urgent security meeting following the strikes. The PMF is part of Iraq’s security apparatus but includes factions with close ties to Iran, which the US has long accused of destabilising the region. No immediate comment from Iranian officials was reported.
