A 27-year-old woman and her five-month-old daughter died after a speedboat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday night, and the boat's captain was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment. The 22-foot Bayliner overturned at 10:25 p.m. near Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Twelve people were rescued from the water before police arrived. Police divers later located the woman, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The infant also died. On Sunday, the Coast Guard said the operator faces criminal charges and that authorities are investigating whether the vessel was operating as an illegal charter. The investigation is ongoing.
