An Indian national accused of strangling his girlfriend near the University of Arizona has been arrested in Germany. Varun Batchigari allegedly killed Julissa Salazar, then boarded a flight to India before FBI agents intervened, according to federal sources.
Batchigari entered the United States on a student visa, the sources said. The victim was found dead near the campus, and the investigation led to Batchigari as the suspect. He reportedly took a flight bound for India in an attempt to flee, but was taken into custody in Germany instead.
The arrest followed cooperation between U.S. and German authorities, though the exact circumstances of his detention have not been released. Batchigari now faces possible extradition to Arizona, where prosecutors are expected to bring charges.
