US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he had cancelled a planned military attack on Iran after Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries asked him to hold off, saying the terms of a deal had been agreed.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the agreement would include the full and immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat. He said the United States was fully prepared and ready to launch military action against Iran with a level of force not seen since World War II, but agreed to cancel the attack so that a deal could be made rapidly. He added that Israel shared this commitment.
Trump's message came amid media reports that he had been considering new, intense strikes on Iran over the weekend. According to sources, the US and Israel had prepared one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against Iran's energy infrastructure.
