India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to a BRICS event, and separately proposed a bilateral visit, as strained ties over the ouster of former premier Sheikh Hasina continue.
The invitation was confirmed by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. It comes ahead of a scheduled address by Sheikh Hasina, prompting Bangladesh's government to renew a media ban. Authorities have asked all television, newspapers, online portals and social media not to broadcast any statements or press releases by Hasina.
Relations between the neighbours have been strained since Hasina fled to New Delhi after being removed from power two years ago. The current Bangladesh administration has said her return would be a legal procedure that will take its course.
