The Calcutta High Court, hearing a plea challenging a government notification that makes singing the complete national song mandatory in madrasas, said on Friday that "heavens will not fall" if all six stanzas of Vande Mataram are sung. The court questioned why students should be forced to sing specific religious or nationalistic songs. The public interest litigation argued that compelling the rendition could disrupt communal harmony and lead to legal complications. The court observed that no coercive steps have been taken so far in connection with the notification. The Additional Solicitor General opposed the interim prayer, describing some of the PILs as publicity-driven. The bench is yet to deliver a final order on the matter.
