Will Gluck, director of the new Universal romantic comedy “One Night Only,” has responded to online comparisons between the film and the dystopian “Purge” franchise. The movie, now in theaters, is set in an alternate reality where premarital sex is outlawed except for a single 12-hour window each year—a premise that has drawn obvious parallels to the “Purge” series, despite the film’s intended rom-com tone.
Gluck acknowledged the comparisons during recent press for the film, which stars Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as two New Yorkers who meet on that one permitted night. The writer and producer have also addressed audience questions about the rules of this alternate world. Turner, when asked about how the film’s logic works, suggested that viewers who watch the movie will quickly understand the realm the characters inhabit.
The film is currently playing in theaters.
