Police Move Sonam Wangchuk to Hospital; Another Activist Begins Hunger Strike
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was moved from Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to a hospital by police on Saturday, citing medical needs. The action came after nearly a month of protest against the Education Minister. Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike demanding changes in education policy.
Following his removal, Abhijeet Dipke of the Citizens' Janta Party announced an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the police action, with MP Sanjay Singh alleging that force was used to stop a planned march to Parliament on July 20. He urged young people to continue supporting Wangchuk's cause.
The police defended the move, stating it was for essential medical care. The protest had been ongoing at Jantar Mantar, a common site for demonstrations in the capital. Wangchuk's supporters have vowed to continue the agitation.
