India's stricter law against examination paper leaks has come into force after President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the bill. Under the new law, investigations into exam fraud must be completed within two months, and trials will be held in fast-track courts for quicker resolution. Individuals convicted of paper leaks face up to ten years in prison and significant fines. Organized rackets involved in such malpractices will attract even harsher penalties.
The government said the tougher law was necessary because repeated leaks in recruitment and entrance examinations over the past two years had shown the penalties under a 2024 law to be too weak. Opposition parties, however, criticized the passage of the bill, saying the debate was rushed.
