Three of football's six continental confederations have publicly turned on FIFA president Gianni Infantino, accusing him of a fundamental breach of trust over plans to sell World Cup rights.
In a joint open letter published on Monday, the European, Asian and North/Central American governing bodies said Infantino's handling of the matter showed a failure of judgment, not merely poor communication. They argued that football 'belongs to no individual' and reiterated their demand for a fresh start at the top of the sport's world governing body.
The letter was co-signed by UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). It focuses on the process surrounding a proposal for the sale of World Cup commercial and broadcasting rights.
FIFA has pushed back, saying the criticism is designed to undermine Infantino. The FIFA president, for his part, has apologised for the way the process was handled.
