Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a US-backed peace plan for Gaza, saying his country will not withdraw until Hamas fully disarms. The move sets him against a roadmap endorsed by President Donald Trump and by Hamas, and is the latest sign of a disconnect between the two leaders.
The US-backed Board of Peace, which presented the plan, has now hardened its conditions for an Israeli withdrawal after its senior officials met Netanyahu on Monday. The board linked any withdrawal beyond the so-called Yellow Line - the line dividing Gaza into areas under Israeli and Palestinian control - to the complete disarmament of Hamas, abandoning the phased approach it presented last week.
The Yellow Line was established following the ceasefire of October 2025. Since then, Israel has seized additional Palestinian territory and now controls more than 60 percent of the enclave, with Netanyahu having said the aim is to increase that to around 70 percent.
Netanyahu faces a tough reelection fight in October and has heavily promoted his relationship with Trump, whom he met again last week. The rejection of the plan comes as Israel has ramped up its attacks on the Palestinian enclave.
