Prashant Kishor has won his first election, taking the Bankipur assembly seat in a bypoll and ending the Bharatiya Janata Party's 30-year dominance there. The victory marks a turnaround for Kishor, whose Jan Suraaj party had previously won no seats. According to an analysis, his campaign strategy was to appeal to two different voter groups at once: upper-caste voters looking for a BJP alternative and Muslim voters traditionally backing the Rashtriya Janata Dal. The same dual appeal was made in the same seat in the same election. Kishor, a political strategist, made his electoral debut in this bypoll, and the result within months flipped his party's fortunes from zero to a win.
