Meta Platforms is unwinding its $2 billion acquisition of Chinese-founded artificial intelligence platform Manus, more than three months after Beijing blocked the deal on national security grounds. The move marks another high-profile decoupling between the US and China in the AI sector.
Manus said in a note to users on Tuesday that it would delete data generated by "certain users" on or after December 29, when Meta acquired the start-up, as part of the company's transition. The company did not specify which users would be affected.
Meta announced plans to acquire Manus in December, describing it as its latest effort to shore up its AI strategy. The deal was blocked by Chinese regulators on national security grounds.
