Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned an attack by Iran on a United Arab Emirates tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a threat to maritime security and global energy supplies. The foreign ministry said in a statement that Iran's continued attacks violate international law, including Security Council Resolution 2817, which guarantees freedom of navigation in international waterways. Saudi Arabia said it holds Iran responsible for the consequences of its actions and demanded an immediate end to such violations. The kingdom also expressed full solidarity with the UAE and support for measures it takes to protect its sovereignty and resources.
Despite the condemnation, an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz remains far away, and sailors still face danger in the waterway. Tim Wilkins, who works for a tanker industry group, said ships are in limbo and transiting remains dangerous.
