Myanmar's military government has released the first photographs of Aung San Suu Kyi since it ousted her in a February 2021 coup. The images show the detained democratic leader meeting with an official from the International Committee of the Red Cross, the first publicised contact between her and a foreign official since her arrest. The president's office said the meeting took place on Monday. Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, appeared healthy in the photos, which mark her first confirmed outside contact in 2.5 years. Her son, Kim Aris, said the images gave him "a reason to hope" for the first time since the coup, according to NPR. The military takeover, led by Min Aung Hlaing, triggered an ongoing civil war that has killed more than 100,000 people across the country.
