Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal survived an attack on him, with two Indian news outlets giving differing accounts of the incident.
The Times of India reported that a gunman tried to assassinate Badal at the Golden Temple in Amritsar while he was observing a religious ritual. According to the report, quick-thinking volunteers deflected the gunman's aim, causing the shot to fire harmlessly into the air. The attacker was swiftly arrested. The report described it as a second assassination attempt and raised serious questions about security measures at the Sikh shrine. It also mentioned allegations of misconduct against Badal.
NDTV, however, reported that the attacker tried to stab Badal in the stomach. It said Badal has been admitted to a private hospital in Nanded.
Both reports agree Badal survived. The conflicting accounts could not be immediately reconciled.
