Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has moved a resolution urging the central government to keep the number of Lok Sabha seats at 543, amid the ongoing delimitation debate. The move comes as the Centre considers a delimitation exercise based on population figures, which could shift more seats to northern states with higher population growth. The resolution contends that states that effectively implemented family planning programmes should not be penalised for their success.
By freezing the total number of seats at 543, the relative strength of southern states in the Lok Sabha would remain unchanged, preserving their influence in national decision-making. The resolution is part of a wider delimitation row, with several southern states worried about losing parliamentary representation.
