A 57-year-old woman was shot in the forehead during an eviction drive in Chandigarh, leaving her in critical condition. She had arrived with court permission and police protection to vacate a house. An argument broke out with a high court advocate, who allegedly fired a shot at her. She was rushed to a hospital and remains critical. Police and forensic teams are at the scene investigating.
In a separate development, the Supreme Court has stayed a Delhi High Court order that declared the National Stock Exchange of India (NSEI) a 'public authority' under the Right to Information Act. The High Court's division bench had observed that if a body is owned, controlled or substantially financed by the appropriate government, it would qualify as a public authority.
Meanwhile, a High Court has directed the Chief Secretary to constitute a high-level committee to undertake a comprehensive review of the functioning of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). The committee, to be headed by the Chief Secretary, will examine leadership and institutional governance, institutional capacity, investigation, preventive vigilance, administrative reforms, technology, and public interface.
