India's Parliament passed several bills, including legislation that could allow charges on UPI payments and a measure updating how digital bank records are used as evidence.
The Lok Sabha passed a bill that would permit service charges on UPI and other digital payments. Currently, UPI transactions are exempt from such charges, while RTGS and NEFT already carry service fees.
The Rajya Sabha passed a bill to recognize digital bank records as evidence, replacing the 135-year-old Bankers' Books Evidence Act of 1891. The legislation aligns the legal framework with contemporary digital banking.
Separately, the Lok Sabha approved the Tribunals Reforms Bill, which sets up a panel to oversee appointments to national tribunals. The bill was cleared without debate, and the Law Minister said it would bring uniformity to the selection process and improve transparency.
