Guatemala remained on alert Tuesday after hundreds of people were forced from their homes by an eruption of the Fuego volcano, one of Central America's most active peaks. The country's disaster management agency said 659 people were evacuated from eight villages in the danger area and are being housed in nearby shelters. The eruption began Monday morning, with clouds of gas and ash rising above the volcano as lava and pyroclastic flows streamed down its slopes. Fuego, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, prompted authorities to issue the second-highest warning level and urge residents to take shelter. Officials also warned onlookers to stop climbing a nearby volcano to film the eruption, saying such trips were dangerous. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The evacuees will remain in shelters until the volcano's activity subsides, the agency said.
