Hundreds of thousands of Haitians living legally in the United States now face the risk of arrest and deportation after the Trump administration officially ended their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The decision took effect after a federal judge confirmed that a court order blocking the termination was no longer in force.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the government is going after those who lost their status. The move sends people back to a home country racked with crime, violence and political unrest.
TPS had allowed Haitians to live and work legally in the US for years. A June Supreme Court ruling upended judicial review of the program, opening the door for immigration enforcement to track down and detain Haitians on a large scale.
On Wednesday, US District Judge Ana Reyes confirmed that her earlier order preventing the Department of Homeland Security from ending the protections was no longer in effect.
