The death toll in the border crisis between Spain and Morocco has risen to 67, including people who drowned and others killed in a stampede as they tried to cross a breakwater barrier. The crisis began when tens of thousands of people crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with about 60,000 making the crossing within 24 hours, according to reports.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has sent a letter to Brussels condemning what he called a 'polarising and illegal' reaction from some EU countries. He said most EU states had shown support for Spain, but others had displayed an 'absolutely selfish and unsupportive' attitude.
The crisis has also pushed Italy to restore border checks with Spain, testing Europe's open-border system. Conservative leaders across Europe have reacted to the influx.
