Italy suspends Schengen free travel with Spain over Ceuta migrant crisis

Italy has suspended the European Union's Schengen border-free travel agreement with Spain for one month after thousands of migrants surged into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco. The measure, announced by Italy's interior ministry on Friday, means travellers flying or sailing between the two countries will need to show a passport – even though the countries do not share a land border. It follows Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's call on Thursday for Spain's suspension from the Schengen zone, in which she called the images of the arriving migrants "shocking". The move is likely to anger Madrid. Spain has deployed its military to Ceuta in response to the crisis, and at least 34 people have been reported killed trying to cross into the enclave. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the mass influx as a violation of Spain's territorial integrity.
